A Place of Surprises?

When a person dies and if they have trusted Christ as their Lord and Savior, they will spend eternity with Him in Heaven. The Bible declares that our eyes have not seen, nor have our ears heard, neither has it entered into our minds the beauty and glorious things we shall behold in Heaven (1 Corinthians 2:9). I believe that we will be amazed, even surprised, at how perfect Heaven will be. Everybody will get along there, we will never die, there will be no sickness or pain, or anything to hurt us anymore.
I remember the greatest Bible preacher I’ve ever heard say that heaven will be a place of surprises. He explained further that there will surely be people in heaven that you and I thought would never be there. By the same token, there will be people absent that we thought would surely be there. The truth of the matter is that no one knows who will be in Heaven except God Himself. When a person takes their last breath, and their heart beats for the last time, we do not know whether they were saved or not. Even though we can look at a person’s life and the fruit they display, and form our own opinion about them, we really don’t know where they will be spending eternity. I am glad that these matters are entirely in God’s hands. It matters not how beautiful the funeral service and music is, or how eloquent the eulogy may be.
After all, Jesus did say that not everyone who says “Lord, Lord” shall enter into the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21). We do not get to Heaven by simply saying words. We will be in heaven by believing in our hearts that Jesus Christ, God’s son, is the only way to get there. Jesus died for the sins of the world by shedding his precious blood and dying for us on a cruel Roman cross. He was buried and rose again the third day from the grave, and this is the gospel a person must believe in order to be born again. Jesus had no sins of his own, but died for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. He still requires that a person be born again, or they can never enter the kingdom of heaven.
So, even though Heaven may be a mystery to some people, it doesn’t have to be that way for those who are saved by His grace. The Bible declares that “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” (1 John 5:13) We do not have to be in the dark, we can have full assurance and peace of where we will spend eternity because of Jesus and Jesus alone!
Where will you spend eternity? We only have two choices, heaven or hell. These eternal matters must be settled this side of the grave. A person usually dies the way they have lived. Say, how are you living?
